How to Stay Hydrated Over Winter

With the cooler months here, it is very easy to forget to drink enough fluids to keep your body healthy. An adult is made up of around 60% water and almost brings truth to the saying that ‘humans are cucumbers with anxiety’. Water is essential to allow your body to:

  1. Help you digest your food.
  2. Transport nutrients around your body.
  3. Help you maintain a happy state called homeostasis which includes a healthy body temperature.
  4. Water allows your brain to make hormones and neurotransmitters.
  5. Makes sure the toxins and waste products in your body are properly flushed out.
  6. Helps transport oxygen around your body.

You will know the feeling of dehydration and it can hinder your ability to think, perform at work and life. Your body can mistake thirst for hunger which may lead you to reach for a snack when it should be a glass of water. Here are ways you can keep on top of your fluid needs:

  1. Drink a glass of water when you first wake up.

This is a great routine to get into as your body tends to be slightly dehydrated after sleep. Try having a water bottle or glass of water on your bedside table as a reminder.

  1. Make fluids enjoyable

If you find it difficult to drink water or enough water to meet your needs have you tried QUARTERPAST Real Fruit Tea Infusions? They are made using ingredients with no artificial colours, sweeteners, or flavours. This makes drinking enough fluids easy to do rather than a chore.

I’ve tried QUARTERPAST Real Fruit Tea Infusions and they are a delicious and nutritious way to not only warm you up this Winter but to consume ingredients which are full of antioxidants and phytonutrients known to improve your overall health and wellbeing. In addition to the health benefits from the ingredients, the different varieties will add their own unique touch. Like the new Hibiscus Ginger & Manuka Honey flavour which is made using ingredients  such as hibiscus known to promote a healthier immune system. Try adding a few cups to your day and remember your thermos when out and about.

  1. Eat your water

When you eat your meals and snacks including fruit and vegetables is important help to keep you hydrated on top of the many additional benefits these two food groups can boast. Did you know a radish is 95% water, cauliflower is 92% water, mandarins are 80% water and strawberries are 92% water!

  1. Keep track

Keeping track of how much you drink is a great way to be aware if you are drinking enough. This can be written down on post it notes or tracked in an app on your smart phone. Before exercise most people need 35mls per kg of body weight a day.

Take home message: Look after your body by keeping it hydrated over the cooler months. You will feel and function at your best if you stay hydrated.
