Why the Health of the Planet Is the Key To Your Health

Many of us are becoming more aware that a healthy planet is needed for healthy people but what can you really do to make a difference? You have more power than you realise and by taking on these steps as a lifestyle choice you are not only helping the planet to stay healthy but yourself as well. Here are some easy to follow tips which can help you live your best and healthiest and reduce your impact on the planet we call home:

1. Introduce Meat Free Mondays

This is a growing trend for many reasons, but two highlights include:

  • Firstly, the impact producing meat has on the planet, especially meat from ruminant animals. Ruminant animals produce greenhouse gases which are damaging the ozone layer and are a significant factor in global warming. In addition to this the resources to feed and grow the animal to a large enough animal to eat is huge and eating vegetarian removes a lot of this waste and resources.
  • The second reason for your health is meat, particularly red and processed meats increase your risk of certain cancers including colorectal cancer. Vegetarian meals which include legumes like baked beans, red kidney beans, chickpeas, lentils have been linked to improved health in your colon, so love your beans

2. Find Your Local Farmer’s Market

Eating local decreases the amount of food miles your food has travelled to get to your plate which ultimately leaves the planet happier. Getting to know your local farmers is a great way to improve the relationship you have with food and the appreciation of what occurs for the food to get onto your plate. Farmers Markets are also a great way to learn how to eat seasonally which can increase the variety of the foods you eat, which also helps your health.

3. Grow Your Own

Have you ever tried growing your own fruit or vegetables? Eating food from your garden tastes so different to the produce you receive from the supermarkets because it is so much fresher. The feeling of growing your own food is something special and I highly recommend giving it a go.

4. Buy from Ethical and Sustainable Sources

When you go shopping take the time to investigate what brands are using sustainable sources and methods. Normally a brand will tell you if it is Fair Trade or from a sustainable source and there are apps which can also help you make the best choices.

5. Whole Food Over Processed

Whole foods as the word described is still in its whole form. This means the processing to achieve the final product is much less than processed. Increasing the processing often increases the waste from both the food source and packaging. For your health, whole foods like wholegrains or fresh fruit and vegetables have far more nutrients and benefits for you than refined, processed foods.

6. Remember to bring your reusable bags to reduce waste

7. Ask Questions

When you buy food from a takeaway or are deciding which restaurant to enjoy ask questions about where their produce is from. This will help you pick the best choice for the planet and will often help make changes within the restaurant and takeaway shops. You as the patron are important for business and so it is in their best interest to accommodate your needs.

Take Home Message: Look after the planet and you are looking after your health. These simple changes to your lifestyle can simultaneously do both and leave the planet for your children to enjoy as well.
