You are not alone if you are unsure exactly what sauerkraut is above the fact that it goes in a hot dog. Sauerkraut is created by fermenting cabbage which increases the lactic acid content of the cabbage.
This is not a new food but has been eaten as far back as the 4th century BC and is starting to gain popularity again. I found over 5 varieties of flavours in the fridge of a specialty store which prompted me to write this article.
Below are some of the health benefits:
- Sauerkraut contains probiotics or good bacteria. Having optimal amount and diversity of probiotics is essential for gut health but also immune function, metabolism and organ health.
- Sauerkraut contains vitamins A, B, C and K.
- Has high mineral content.
- Low in calories.
Other potential health benefits of sauerkraut include:
- Treatment of depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders, and Parkinson's disease. Although sauerkraut is reported to mix with some medicines and is not a good idea before at least talking to your GP!
Take home message: For health, enjoying a probiotic rich food like sauerkraut two times a day is a good goal. The next time you are offered sauerkraut with your hot dog at a football game you know that saying yes is a good choice for your health.
