It seems these days everyone who eats is a nutrition expert. This has led to the numerous fad diets available and understandably there is a lot of confusion about what to believe. For those who do not know, an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) is someone who has undertaken education above a Bachelor of Nutrition to a Masters or Honours level.
In addition to this, becoming an APD requires registration with the Dietitian’s Association of Australia and to undergo at least 30 hours each year of continued education to remain up to date with the latest evidence in all areas of nutrition.
APDs are qualified to recommend a pattern of eating based on an individual’s need. Taking into consideration their medical, family, social history, as well as any biochemistry such as blood tests, Dietitians work together with you to achieve your goals.
APDs do not completely change everything about how you eat and the way you like to eat.By working with an APD you will discover that you can still maintain the fun in food while still achieving your nutrition goals.
An Accredited Practising Dietitian will work with you to set SMART goals. Success for the long term happens with goals which are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-constrained.
There are many ‘professionals’ out there who are making claims on the best way to eat for optimal results. My concern is some of these recommendations can actually harm your body and future health. So if you want advice from the most qualified professional and to increase your chances successfully achieving your goals, make an appointment with an APD. It is a well worth investment!
